Megan D (Megan Davidson) is a 19 year old acoustic songwriter from Edinburgh, her impressive, emotive lyrics are extremely transferable and enjoyed by people from all walks of life. Her unique voice combined with subtle and gentle guitar melodies make her the one to watch in Edinburgh…. make that Scotland. From someone so young, Megan has already achieved a lot such as playing at some of Scotland’s best music venues like King Tut’s in Glasgow and STV wrote a small biopic. I sat down with her at Café Camino in Edinburgh with a plan to get a better insight into how she manages to produce these remarkable songs.

1) How old were you when you first started?

I started playing guitar since I can remember, there was always a guitar lying about, I always loved just strumming, I didn’t know what I was doing but I still enjoyed it. My mum sent me to choir but I didn’t really like it, I just messed about. When I got older I started playing covers with friends and Ioved that. Then I started writing my own music when I was sixteen at school, I’ve always liked writing stories so the guitar and writing fit together.

2) How does the song writing process begin?

Lots of different ways, I’m not someone who has an experience then writes a song about that, I used to just come home from school and write songs, usually just stories I made up. Song writing isn’t a scheduled thing for me, I couldn’t just sit down and write a whole song, I have periods when I don’t write songs for months, it’s a bit annoying and unpredictable.

3) Is there a common theme in your songs?

I’ve been trying to think about that, there probably is something but I’m not getting it. A few songs mention train journeys, I like trains. There probably is a word that’s in every song but I’ve just not noticed.

4) What are your future plans?

Just doing the same stuff I’ve been doing. I do a lot of busking in Edinburgh and Glasgow, I’d like to go further and travel more, do more gigs and write more songs. And hopefully I’ll release something, I give out demos while busking and at gigs but I’d like to properly release something.

5) Who would you say has influenced you?

I listen to a wide range of music, there wasn’t a particular person I listened to that made me write songs. My dad used to play country music in the car and I liked the stories behind the songs, I always get the lyrics from the sleeve and read them. I think that had an impact.

6) What is your dream?

To make money by playing music, to be able to live happily. I like what I’m doing at the moment, I’d love to tour at some point, I think I’ll always play music.

7) Any favourite gig venues?

King Tut’s is my favorite, I like Edinburgh, Sneaky Pete’s is a nice place to play, I do a lot of wee places in Glasgow like Broadcast. My top gigs are more to do with the crowd, if they are having a good time then that’s my favorite place to be.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Anything to do with writing, maybe something to do with animals or a train driver

What profession would you not like to do?

Anything that has a lot of pressure, a policewoman maybe, something scary or life threatening

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

That’s a tricky question, I’d like him to say he’d let me in, although I don’t know if I want to go to heaven, I don’t like the idea of heaven and foreverness

It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Megan, and there is no doubt in my mind that she is the one to watch in 2015….unless she becomes a train driver.
